KUCHING: Some 200 people took part in the “Berjalan Teguh Bersama Keluarga Malaysia” at the Kuching Waterfront, yesterday morning.

A large group of people had gathered at the waterfront as early as 5am to attend the programme.

They included State Legislative Assembly Speaker Tan Sri Datuk Muhammad Asfia Awang Nassar, Minister in the Premier’s Department Datuk John Sikie, Deputy Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Datuk Snowdan Lawan and Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department Datuk Sharifah Hasidah Sayeed Aman Ghazali.

Also in attendance during the programme were Sarawak Tourism Board (STB) chief executive officer Sharzede Salleh Askor and Kuching South City Council (MBKS) mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg arrived exactly at 7.31am to officiate at the function.

The programme started with Zumba Keluarga Malaysia where everyone gathered together and performed Zumba exercise dances to warm up their bodies in the cool morning.

Abang Johari later led the participants on a walk across the Darul Hana Bridge to the DUN building over a distance of 0.65 kilometres.

“The walk symbolises unity and harmony in the spirit of patriotism as one big family in Sarawak and Malaysia in general,” said Information Department Sarawak director Jaafar Jantan.

“The concept of group walking in a harmonious and relaxed family atmosphere also translates the openness of leaders and the people to stand together.

“We should be grateful and acknowledge the fact that our leaders always have great commitment, vision and mission for the well-being and prosperity of the people whether at the national level or the state level,” added Jaafar.

The event ended with the launch of the state-level National Month and Flying the Jalur Gemilang at the Atrium in DUN Building, which was officiated at by Abang Johari.
