KUCHING: The hydrogen sector will be a major contributor to the economic wellbeing of Sarawak, says Head of State Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud.

In his opening address at the 19th Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting here on Tuesday (May 17), he said this could be seen once the state had reduced its dependence on traditional industries.

“Moving towards 2030, Sarawak will continue to explore news ideas for its future development.

“We will create new sources of income to reduce our dependence on natural resources and dwindling fossil fuels.

“And I am pleased that Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has introduced a far-sighted initiative to transform the state’s economy.”

Taib was also proud that Sarawak was at the forefront of developing the hydrogen economy in Southeast Asia.

“I am also pleased that Sarawak is working with the private sector and foreign governments to harness the potential of the carbon market as new revenue streams from forest resources will be generated for carbon trading projects.”

Commenting on tackling climate change, he said this required a large-scale effort.

“I am grateful that the Post Covid-19 Development Strategy 2030 (PCDS 2030) has included sustainable development and climate change as part of development initiatives in Sarawak.

“I also commend the government’s initiative to establish a new Ministry of Energy and Environmental Sustainability, whose role is to provide direction, coordinate the development of the green agenda, renewable energy and climate change in Sarawak.”

“Also, we need to work with experts from various international bodies on climate and implement climate law to address the issue of climate change as it is a worldwide phenomenon that requires concerted efforts from all countries,” added Taib.
