Empower district education office to decide local matters in Sarawak

Secara Rawak

KUCHING: State education department or district education office should be empowered to decide based on local know-how and context, including allowing students of boarding school to go back to their home for special festives season for the said community.

According to Bandar Kuching MP Dr Kelvin Yii in a statement, the state education department should be aware of such needs and even sensitivities, and be empowered to make decisions suited to the local area, including taking feedback and input from the district education office.

He said this in response to a reported rejection by the state education department based on a circular by the Ministry of Education not allowing Christian students from a school on the state to go home for Good Friday and Easter celebration.

This, Dr Kelvin said, would be in line with the call to empower and restotre greater autonomy in the state’s decision-making, especially on education matters in Sarawak withoit being bounded by certain federal-issued circular which may not be fully practical in a local context.
