KUCHING: The Ministry of Energy and Environmental Sustainability is collaborating with the Natural Resources and Environment Board (NREB) and Department of Environment (DoE) to implement the Electrical and Electronic Waste Collection (BEE) programme.

The BEE programme encourages the public to dispose of their household electrical and electronic waste responsibly.

Assistant Energy and Environmental Sustainability Minister Dr Hazland Abang Hipni welcomed the collaboration, saying: “It (programme) will be done through contractors licensed under the Environmental Quality (Scheduled Waste) Regulations 2005, Environmental Quality Act 1974.”

“A total of 12 group collection activities have been planned for this year, covering areas from Kuching to Miri,” Dr Hazland added on Thursday (Feb 10).

For the record, 73.4 metric tonnes of e-waste was collected in Sarawak in 2020, and 14.9 metric tonnes, last year.

“If e-waste is not properly disposed of, it can endanger lives as well as the environment.”

He urged the public to dispose of their e-waste according to regulations.

“Proper disposal of e-waste must be conducted by contractors or premises licensed by DoE.

“I believe that this BEE programme will be a catalyst for environmental sustainability in Sarawak.”
