KUCHING: It is the prerogative of Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg on who and how big his Cabinet should be as long as it is within the provisions of the State Constitution.
In stating this, Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) vice-president Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said it was the same when it came to what portfolios he and the others should be holding.
“Democratic Action Party (DAP) Sarawak chairman Chong Chieng Jen must understand that heading the Chief Minister’s Office or any of the ministries comes with responsibilities and trust.
“It is not like what Chong claims, (that) they or he (Abang Johari) can do as he wishes.
“Every action and expense spent by the ministries must be accounted for and audited according to financial procedures and not as a minister’s pleases,” he told New Sarawak Tribune when contacted on Monday (Jan 3).
Abdul Karim was prompted for comments after Chong described the State Cabinet as being bloated with an unprecedented concentration of power in the hands of Abang Johari.
The incoming Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, and Minister of Youth, Sport and Entrepreneur Development, said there was no issue of a bloated ministry as each and every one of the ministers and assistant ministers had specific roles and duties.
“Now, I can see why the Pakatan Harapan (PH) government and Chong as the former Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs (KPDNHEP) deputy minister in the 22-month PH government failed.”
Chong, he said, should focus on why Sarawakians rejected DAP in the recent state polls and why so many DAP candidates lost badly, with many losing their deposit.
“He should be gentleman enough to swallow his pride and gracefully resign as DAP’s Sarawak head and give it to someone better to lead the party,” said Abdul Karim.
