LIMBANG: All agencies under the Limbang Divisional Disaster Management Committee (DDMC) are prepared to face the possibility of floods caused by the northeast monsoon season, which is expected to last from November this year to March next year.
According to a report by the Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas), Limbang Deputy Resident Sebi Abang said this on Tuesday (Dec 28) after chairing the Limbang DDMC meeting on preparedness in facing the possibility of floods.
He explained that these agencies included the Limbang Division’s Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba), Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), Civil Defence Force (APM), Sarawak Social Welfare Department (JKMS) and Health Ministry (MoH).
“The monsoon is predicted to bring heavy rains in certain areas, which are expected to cause floods including in Sarawak,” he said.
Sebi said the meeting also involved updates on the amount of logistics owned by each agency and personnel involved, preparations for the provision of food supplies for flood victims, and preparations for the opening of temporary evacuation centres (PPS) in flood-affected areas.
“Technical agencies such as the Public Works Department (JKR) and Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID) are also reminded to install warning signs in project areas affected by floods or landslides to prevent untoward incidents from happening to the public,” he said.
Limbang DDMC also does not rule out the possibility of adding to the existing PPS if needed in efforts to ensure that the Covid-19 standard operating procedure (SOP) is always complied with to curb the spread of the virus at PPS.
The public, especially residents in flood-prone areas, are urged to always be alert, monitor rising water levels, adhere to evacuation instructions from rescue agencies and bring along their important documents if they are evacuated.
