KUCHING: Sarawak is tipped to become a rich and competitive state in the future with its emphasis on hydrogen economy.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Parliament and Law), Datuk Seri Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar lauded Sarawak’s target to become a major producer and supplier of hydrogen gas in Southeast Asia.

“It is the long-term vision of the state to generate an economy through natural resources and at the same time manage and preserve the environment and reduce carbon emissions.

“As a native of Sarawak and an environmentalist, I support and am proud of this effort. Hopefully it will materialise and Sarawak will move forward as a rich and competitive state,” he said in a Facebook post on Wednesday (Nov 24).

On Tuesday (Nov 23), Chief Minister Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg said the state was set to become the largest hydrogen fuel producer and supplier in the Southeast Asian region beginning 2023.

He said Sarawak, which is rich in water resources, had the ability to produce and supply hydrogen fuel for vehicles.

“Several companies from South Korea, Japan and Australia have expressed interest in investing in the hydrogen production sector in the state and we are on the right track to make Sarawak a major hydrogen producer in the region.”

He said the Sarawak Economic Development Corporation (SEDC), the agency responsible for hydrogen production projects in the state, had set a target of producing 10,000 tonnes of hydrogen fuel a year for the period between 2023 and 2025.

Abang Johari said although at the initial stage, the cost to implement the project was high, it was expected to become more affordable in the next five to 10 years.
