KUCHING: The Orang Ulu Chamber of Commerce and Industry (OUCCI) applauds the federal government’s initiative under the 2022 National Budget to provide 20 additional mobile banks (bank bergerak) for rural areas.

OUCCI president Datuk Mutang Tagal hoped that the mobile banks would be placed in Belaga, Baram, Ulu Limbang, Meligan highlands and Bario highlands.

“The presence of these banks will allow rural farmers and agropreneurs to deposit their savings safely, rather than hiding them under the pillows, in tins, or in other containers.

“These agropreneurs can also seek loans and trade financing for their projects from these mobile banks,” he said in a statement on Sunday (Nov 7).

The mobile banking initiative began in Sarawak this year in the town of Sungai Asap, Belaga, and has received encouraging feedback from the public.

It was mentioned in the budget statement that many rural residents came to use the mobile banking services provided by Bank Simpanan Nasional.

The additional 20 mobile banks are expected to operate next year in 250 rural areas and sub-districts (mukim), especially in Sabah and Sarawak.
