KUCHING: Normalcy can only return to the marketplace after all hawkers and petty traders have been vaccinated, said Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Dr James Jemut Masing.

He lauded Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) Market and Petty Traders chairman Albert Tiang in pushing for vaccination of all the hawkers and petty traders.

Masing was confident that businesses could be opened once the business people were fully vaccinated and protected from the Covid-19.

“When this happens, the movement control order (MCO) and incidents of white flags will be a thing of the past. This is because people can then work to earn their living.

“However, in order to prevent further occurrence of Covid-19, hawkers and petty traders can put stipulations by accepting only customers with vaccinated cards to their premises,” he said today.

He also reminded on the importance of taking precautions as the Covid-19 would be around for a while and it was something that everyone must learn to live with.

Tiang recently said that SMC was seeking to vaccinate 100 percent of its hawkers and their assistants in order to regain the public’s confidence.

He pointed out those who had yet to be vaccinated once the vaccination drive is completed in August would not be allowed to trade.
