Serious decisions vital for economic resilience

KUCHING: While the federal government has laid out policies to address the ailing economy for the short term, the leaders need to make serious decisions to sustain it in the long run.

Newly minted Dewan Negara Senator Jaziri Alkaf A. Suffian said it is crucial that the economic recovery resumes and he believes that the recently approved 2021 Federal Budget is key to such achievement.

“It is my commitment and promise that I am doing whatever I can to assist our Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, to ensure our economy is growing and the well-being of our B40s are addressed and looked after.

“This is along with ensuring our students of all ages resume their education with as little obstruction as possible in preparing for their future. This is my resolution,” he said in his New Year message.

Jaziri said Malaysia needs to look to its youth to propel its economy by empowering those working in the gig economy and entrepreneurship.

“Those youths who are affected by the Covid-19 crisis and lost their jobs, could be upskilled and empowered by industry-backed initiatives through export driven economy on a global scale.

“This could provide the extra economic boost while reducing the youth unemployment rate,” he said.

To ensure the country will have the intellectual capital it needs to be competitive on the global stage, the children need to be equipped with skills for the future, the senator pointed out.

“Future skills like enterprising, innovative, creative and resilient are prerequisites in creating new technologies, innovations and more discoveries. Young people with these ‘soft skills’ will thrive in the future.

“Education is close to my heart and I am committed in providing children the opportunities that they deserve and close the achievement gap between students in big cities and those in rural longhouse,” he said.
