Self-quarantine to prevent spread

KUCHING: Sarawakians who have just returned from China in the past two weeks are advised take several precautionary measures against the Coronavirus.

Local Government and Housing Minister Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian has suggested self-quarantine for 14 days for those who had returned from China.

He said self-quarantine is necessary in view of the fact that the virus spreads like the influenza virus —via droplets from coughing and nasal secretions.

“Some may not know that they have been infected with the virus because there are no symptoms like fever or coughing.

“The incubation of the virus is between seven and 14 days. This means that other people can be infected within this period because the virus can’t be detected at the early stage.

“Self-quarantine, therefore, can help to prevent the transmission of the virus,” he said when asked by reporters at his Chinese New Year open house on Saturday.

Dr Sim, who is a medical doctor by profession, also advised the public to seek immediate medical treatment if they have breathing difficulties and respiratory tract infections like fever and cough.

“There is no clear picture on how this virus is being transmitted because the virus was only discovered recently, “he added.
