KUCHING: Weeks of hot and dry weather have taken its toll on local vegetable growers.
Wholesale and Distributors Association for Kuching and Samarahan Divisions president Lee Pui Siong said the supply of vegetables from the producers had slightly been affected by the current hot weather.
“For the past few weeks, the weather has been very hot and dry which had affected vegetables growth resulting in supply shortage of vegetables,” he said when contacted yesterday.
He added that when there is a shortage in supply to distribute to the consumers, prices are expected to increase.
“This is especially true with leafy vegetables which have increased in price to RM10 per kg now,” he said.
“Another factor which caused the shortage in supply of vegetables is the long Hari Raya and Gawai celebrations, where the farmers had also taken a break.Lee explained further that when there is enough supply, the prices will return to normal.
“I believe the situation would improve in a week or two as the farmers resume their tasks and hopefully there will some rainy days, too,” he said.
He added that he would normally distribute vegetables to the Stutong Market and markets in the Kota Samarahan area.
