GEORGE TOWN: Police believe they have busted yet another drug-distribution syndicate in Penang with the arrest of three men, including the mastermind of the group, and seized 78.7 kilogrammes (kg) cannabis worth RM236,000 in four raids in the state on Wednesday.

Penang Deputy Police Chief Datuk Roslee Chik said the three unemployed men aged between 31 and 41, were detained in an operations which began at 12.30 a.m. until 5.10 a.m. by a team from the Penang Contingent Police Headquarters’ Narcotics Crime Investigation Department.

“The first raid was at a roadside in Taman Pekaka where police detained a man with a slab of compressed cannabis weighing 1.05kg who was believed to be waiting for customers, and following that, we raided a house in the same area and seized 9.05kg of cannabis,” he said in a press conference here yesterday.

He added that following investigations, police detained another man in a Honda City car in front of a nasi kandar restaurant in Juru near here before raiding a house in Mount Erskine, Tanjung Tokong, and arresting the mastermind of the syndicate.

Following further checks conducted on the Honda City car, police seized 68 slabs of cannabis weighing 68.93 kg hidden in the modified back seat and boot of the car.

Roslee said based on investigations, the syndicate was found to be supplying cannabis to neighbouring countries before smuggling and selling it in Penang since a month ago.

“Police also froze a bank account with almost RM300,000 and seized a Toyota Vellfire vehicle and a motorcycle,” he said.

He said one of the three men had seven previous records and all have been remanded for seven days to help in the investigations.

Roslee said from January until Sept 19, as many as 8,191 people have been detained for various offences including drug-distribution, and police have seized various drugs worth RM190.5 million.

“There have many successful drug raids this year, and among the drugs we confiscated were 2,285.8 kg of syabu, cannabis (877.5kg), heroin (121.8kg), ketamine (25.8kg), 3.8 million eramine 5 pills, 452,278 yaba pills and 32,783 ecstasy pills,” he said.–BERNAMA
