SEPANG: The country’s diving queen Pandelela Rinong has described her gold-medal winning feat with Cheong Jun Hoong in the women’s 10m platform event at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia, recently, as a morale booster for three upcoming international competitions.

The three championships are the World Diving Series, the International Swimming Federation (FINA) World Cup, and the 2018 Asian Games in Indonesia.

Pandelela said winning the gold in Commonwealth Games was very meaningful to her, as it was the second one after the 2010 edition in New Delhi, India, where she won the individual 10m platform event.

“Winning a gold medal definitely makes me happy, and I am very pleased with my overall performance this time.

“I admit, the competition this time was very challenging, but I am grateful for the good result,” she told reporters after arriving at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport 2 (KLIA 2) with the national squad from Gold Coast, earlier yesterday.

Jun Hoong, who won the gold at the Games for the first time after falling short in the 2002, 2006, and 2010 editions said she shared her teammate´s sentiments.

“I feel very happy with my performance this time, and I am grateful for winning the gold medal and this is the first for me in the Commonwealth Games after four attempts,” said the athlete from Perak, who is also the National Sportswoman for 2017.

The squad also won two bronze medals at the Games through Leong Mun Yee and Nur Dhabitah Sabri, in the women’s 3m synchronised springboard and 10m synchronised platform events respectively.– BERNAMA
