KUALA LUMPUR: The Barisan Nasional (BN) government will never compromise the nation’s sovereignty, Prime Minister Najib Razak said today.
In a blog post, he said various measures had been taken to ensure that the country continued to enjoy peace and harmony, such as the adoption of the National Security Council Act and Prevention of Terrorism Act.
Najib, who is also BN chairman, said the Anti-Fake News Act 2018 was also enforced to protect the people from being flooded with fake news.
He said although false news might seem like a trivial matter, it was in fact a great threat to security as shown in several countries where fake news was used as a tool to interfere in the democratic process.
“Surprisingly, this matter is supported by some opposition leaders. The future of our country should be determined by Malaysians based on facts, not fake news and false promises and false hopes,” he said.
Najib said he also regretted that certain irresponsible people were prepared to set aside national interests to the extent of bringing foreign intervention to the country due to their greed for power.
He said BN would implement all of the promises and initiatives outlined in its manifesto if given the mandate to continue administering the country.
He added that BN would continue to combat terrorism and extremism through the Global Movement of Moderates, enhance community participation in crime prevention through the police Volunteer Smartphone Patrol application and set up the Cyber Defence Operations Centre under the defence ministry.
The BN government would also expand regional defence diplomacy with neighbouring countries with common borders; continue disseminating the idea of peace and moderation in the country and abroad through the establishment of the King Salman Centre for International Peace; and carry on with the modernisation of the Royal Malaysia Police force.
“Indeed, I am confident that so long as BN continues to administer Malaysia, God willing, the country will continue to prosper and become more successful. Let’s make Malaysia great with BN,” he said.
