Trying to save UMNO just an excuse by Dr Mahathir, Says Salleh

KUALA LUMPUR: Former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad is hiding behind the excuse that whatever action taken by him is for the good of UMNO, Communications and Multimedia Minister Datuk Seri Dr Salleh Said Keruak said today.

In his latest posting in his blog (sskeruak.blogspot.com), Salleh said what Dr Mahathir was doing was actually the opposite.

“How can going into partnership with DAP advisor Lim Kit Siang, who dislikes UMNO the most, and also other opposition members, be considered for the good of UMNO? Is burning down the house, an act of improving the house?” he said.

Dr Mahathir was deeply entrenched with DAP so much so he had become an enemy of UMNO and had made no secret of the fact that he wanted to punish UMNO similar to what he did in 2008, Salleh said.

“UMNO has to realise that Dr Mahathir is working closely with Lim and DAP in the hope that Barisan Nasional (BN) will perform badly during the 14th general election.

“This is why Dr Mahathir could not accept the positive decision made by the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) regarding 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) as well as the explanation given by the Saudi Arabian Government that the RM2.6 billion is indeed a donation,” he said.

Salleh said Dr Mahathir will continue to search for whatever excuse he could find to attack Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.

He said Dr Mahathir appeared to be very confused on what are his real motives.

“First, he (Dr Mahathir) opposes the prime minister and wants him (Najib) replaced, if not, Dr Mahathir alleges that UMNO and BN will lose in the next general election.

“If Najib is detrimental to the party and, therefore, he should be replaced, whom does Dr Mahathir propose as the replacement? This, Mahathir will not state and he even said that it should not be Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

“As Najib said last week in his interview with the Indonesian media, Dr Mahathir is upset that his son, Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir, has failed to climb up the UMNO ladder where he attempted to secure the UMNO Youth leadership in 2009 and an UMNO Vice President’s seat in 2013.

“The UMNO Youth chief and UMNO Vice President posts would be a pre-requisite for Mukhriz to becoming Deputy Prime Minister and in future the Prime Minister and that now appears impossible,” Salleh said.
