DAP and PKR leaders bashing each other

KUCHING: Sarawak DAP and PKR leaders are bashing each other over ongoing negotiation seat allocations.

The negotiation stalled following announcement of candidates ahead of an agreement among Pakatan Harapan.

“The party is still committed to the opposition cause despite PKR saying that it will contest seats that are also being eyed by DAP in the coming state polls,” Chong Chien Jen said in a statement, today.

Chong said he would be travelling to meet with PKR national leaders in Kuala Lumpur this Friday to discuss and solve seat negotiation issues.

“I hope things will work out for the better,” said the DAP Chairperson.

Kuching MP and Kota Sentosa assemblyperson said Sarawak DAP is all for co-operation with PKR in facing BN and as such he would not be making any statement on Sarawak seat negotiations to avoid jeopardising them.

DAP has publicly announced that it wanted to contest in at least 40 seats, and PKR 45 seats. PAS planned to contest in 11 seats. Sarawak State Assembly (DUN) has 82 seats.

“However, my own restraint has been taken advantage of by PKR, both Sarawak and the national level, who have had their national leaders repeatedly making announcements of PKR’s candidates for areas which are still under negotiation.

“Since Wan Azizah has already announced the PKR candidates in that contentious areas, what is there for negotiation over those areas?

“It is an announcement by PKR’s number one person.  It has to be the final decision of PKR, unless PKR is now saying that Wan Azizah’s announcement of candidate is not final?,” Chong asked.

“Out of the 22 seats that PKR president Wan Azizah announced candidates for on Jan 31, at least seven seats are still subject to negotiation,” he said.

Chong said this did not show sincerity on PKR’s part adding that Sarawak DAP wouldn’t mind if such announcements were made by some local PKR branch leaders eager to contest.

In a statement today, Chong  said, it is not a show of sincerity on the part of PKR to negotiate on seat allocations on the one hand and at the same time having its national chairman and leaders making announcement of the party’s candidates on those contentious seats.

“But when such announcements are made by PKR’s national president, it represents the stand of the whole of PKR.

Chong pointed out that DAP will restrain its members from issuing rash statements  about PKR members and leaders in West Malaysia.

PKR chairperson, Baru Bian in statement earlier today said, “These irrational statements by DAP members are detrimental to the image of the opposition in the eyes of the public and I am concerned that they may reflect negatively on his role as leader of the party.”

Sarawak PKR chief Baru Bian says DAP’s attacks as counter-productive, which will only place the opposition coalition on a platter as fodder for the BN parties.

“These irrational statements by his members are detrimental to the image of the opposition in the eyes of the public and I am concerned that they may reflect negatively on his role as leader of the party,” said the Sarawak PKR chief in a statement. – SARAWAKVOICE.COM
